Freezer beef/bulk beef/wholesale beef are terms thrown around in our business, and they can all be used pretty interchangeably. The basic concept, is that buying beef in this fashion means buying a whole, half, or quarter of beef in one go-around.

There are many advantages to buying beef in bulk, such as cost savings, meal planning convenience, freshness, assurance from producer and customization of cuts. However, to those used to buying meat from the grocery store, the task can seem daunting.

This guide from the Oklahoma State Extension office offers tips for those looking to buy bulk beef for at-home use. Here are the basic things to know, for first time buyers.

1.) Know how much meat you’re getting.

Talk with your supplier before making your purchase. They will help you evaluate how much meat you need and how your existing freezer space will work with your desired purchase. The amount of take-home meat you’ll get at one time may be a surprise to you and you’ll need to make sure it fits with your family’s dining habits and storage space.

2.) Decide which cuts you want.

You may know right off the bat which kind of meat is your favorite, but even if you do, it’s important to once again work with your supplier so that you have a pleasant experience buying meat in bulk. Don’t get too much of the good meat ground up, but also make sure that you don’t get tough meat as roasts or steaks. Your beef supplier will be able to help advise you on cut selection.

3.) Consider your savings.

Though the upfront price may be an investment you’re not used to, remember all the ways you save by buying meat in bulk. The bulk price saves you money in the end – and for a higher quality product. And, you save on grocery store trips and meal planning time. Additionally – you know where your money is going. You can see your money going into the local economy instead of turning hands many times at a corporate level.
